Manchester City v Brighton live: score, updates and line-ups

Manchester City progress in the Carabao Cup, beating Brighton 4-3 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw. Goals from Yalcouyé and Rutter had Brighton in front twice, but Kovacic and substitute Vitor Reis struck to level the match either side of half-time, leaving nothing to separate the sides after 90 minutes and extra time. The shootout swung back and forth with misses from Kovacic and Dunk either side, before Ayari's effort was saved by Rulli and Cherki stepped up to send City through.

An enthralling 2-2 draw after extra time is settled by penalties. Dunk and Wieffer both picked up late bookings as Brighton's discipline frayed in a frantic finish, but neither side found a winner in normal time, taking it to the shootout. Foden, Fernández and Doku all converted for City, while Groß, O'Riley and De Cuyper kept Brighton level, before Kovacic's effort was saved by Steele to decide it.

With the game locked at 2-2, both sides have made a flurry of changes as the clock winds down. City have had the better of the closing chances - Foden had a shot blocked and Reis headed just wide from Cherki's delivery - but Brighton's defensive reshuffle, including Dunk coming on, has kept them level. Shots and corners remain heavily in Brighton's favour overall, but the momentum in this final spell has belonged to City as they push for a winner.

City level it up again! Straight from a Cherki free-kick that drifted just wide, substitute Vitor Reis heads home at the near post to make it 2-2. A frantic Etihad contest continues to swing both ways.

Brighton are back in front almost immediately after the restart - Rutter slots home from the left side of the box, teed up by Hadjam, to make it 1-2. City's double substitution at the break hasn't stopped the visitors, who continue to carry the greater threat on the counter.

Kovacic levels things up right on the stroke of half-time, curling in from outside the box after Foden's assist. Brighton had continued to threaten after Yalcouyé's opener, with Ayari and Groß both going close, but it's 1-1 as the sides head in at the break.

Brighton take the lead against the run of play — well, not quite, as they've actually been the more incisive side in this spell. Yalcouyé turns home from close range after Rutter's work down the right, capping a lively sequence that also saw Rulli deny Gómez and Rutter twice. City lead the possession stakes but Brighton now lead on the scoreboard, 0-1.

Man City have made the early running, dominating possession and forcing Brighton into a string of fouls, with Hinshelwood penalised three times and Svoboda picking up a yellow for a late challenge on Cherki. Cherki himself has been City's main threat, seeing a shot saved by Steele and then having another blocked, while Brighton are yet to register an effort of their own. Still goalless, but City look firmly on top at this stage.
